Dathan Ritzenhein officially came home Saturday as the homegrown success story dominated his hometown race.
Some 19 years after he first asked his father if he could run the Fifth Third River Bank Run, the three-time Olympian pulled away and won the 25K by nearly 24 seconds in the 40th edition of the race.
“You couldn’t ask for anything better,” Ritzenhein said moments after kissing his wife and children.
The 34-year-old ran alone the final four miles, cheered wildly as he weaved through John Ball Park and once again as he soaked in the final 800 meters as a soloist along Ottawa Avenue. MICHIGAN LIVE
