MADISON, Wisc., June 6, 2017 /Four Winds Christian Athletics/ — Multiple gold medalist Sanya Richards-Ross revealed that she had an abortion before the 2008 Olympics. She won an individual gold medal in the 400 meters in 2012, a bronze in 2008, plus gold medals in the 4 x 400 relay.
Richards Ross states, “The truth is it’s an issue that isn’t really talked about, especially in sports, and a lot of young women have experienced this. Like, I literally do not know another female track athlete who hasn’t had an abortion and that’s sad.”
Women athletes are having abortions for a number of reasons. Richards Ross seems to regret her abortion and now is married and pregnant.
“Abortion is not an option for any athlete,” states 4 Winds Christian Athletics President Steve McConkey. “People sin and God forgives if a person repents. We need to reach out to women athletes and let them know that abortion is not an answer to a temporary problem.”
Sports ministries should include pro-life events in their programs. Athletes need to know that there is a support system in place. Nearly 80% of Planned Parenthood facilities are located within five miles of a university.
Most sports ministries target universities or high schools. Pro-life speakers addressing abortion at university Christian events is rare, except at events on campus by pro-life groups.
“Reputation is important, however, having an abortion to further a career, or to cover up getting pregnant out of marriage, should not be an option,” McConkey says. “Forgiveness and dependence on God during these times is crucial. We serve a big God who forgives and comforts.”
