Raven Saunders was mired in fifth place, had fouled on two of her previous three throws and seemed headed for a second straight disappointing performance.
Saunders, the former Burke High School standout, had failed in her attempt at a fifth NCAA shot put title just weeks earlier, finishing a surprising fourth at the outdoor championships.
Now, she was down to her final throw at the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships and in danger of missing out on the world championships in London. After the thrill of her Olympic Games debut in Rio de Janeiro last summer, sitting at home during worlds would have been a crushing blow for one of America’s rising young track and field stars.
As Saunders readied for her final throw at Sacramento State’s Hornet Stadium on June 24, she reminded her coach of a Hollywood gunslinger ready for a shootout. POST AND COURIER
